Acidic soils

Normal garden soil is very rarely acidic, and if it is, it is a rather bad choice for vegetable patches - but all rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, magnolia and cyclamen as well as of course all types of heath grow particularly well under such soil conditions. Many of the most popular ornamental plants in the garden are therefore part of this category, because they need acid soil to thrive and can not handle alkaline surroundings. Also among crops there are some well-known representatives such as the blueberries.

If you want to plant such plants in the house garden, you should dig a generous hole and fill it with special acid soil before planting. Such special soil mixtures are often called rhododendron soil mix, as this is the most commonly grown among acid loving plants. Also if you want to use fertilizer later on, its pH value should be adjusted to this special need. Here, too, in almost all cases you can use any commercially available rhododendron fertilizer.
