Asparagus pea is an ancient and very undemanding crop. Its edged pods can be prepared like sugar peas and they are mild in taste. It is recommended to them very early, as the pods will otherwise become fibrous and hard to eat. The pea is also known as English coffee pea as its roasted seeds have often been used as a coffee substitute in the 18th century. The bright red blossoms of the plant are very decorative. It can be planted well as a ground-cover plant.
