Baby’s Breath, or Gypsophila, is a must-have herbaceous perennial for any flower garden. Its flowers are probably best known as the accompaniment to roses and many other cut flowers in traditional floral bouquets. Indeed these tiny, delicate blossoms are a real all-round talent – working well in bouquets and also in dried floral arrangements of all kinds. In a flower bed Baby’s Breath can fill any gap very effectively with its luxuriant, spreading growth and a sumptuous cloud of blossoms. Hundreds of tiny individual flowers on branching panicles give this herbaceous perennial a bush-like expansiveness and stature. All of which makes Baby’s Breath an outstanding companion plant for Globe Thistle, Sage, Bearded Iris, Lavender and any other perennials that favour dry conditions. It prefers free-draining, dry, lime-rich soils and full sun, making it a good plant for a rock garden. If you like to create your own flower bouquets and dried floral wreaths this perennial is one you really can’t do without.
