The name basil derives from the Greek word for "royal" and many enthusiasts regard basil as their queen among the kitchen herbs. Basil is often associated with the Italian cuisine but it also acts as a key ingredient in the Middle Eastern-, Indian-, and American cuisine. The range of different basil varieties and their aromas is extensive, for example with some species tasting of hints of lemon and even notes of cinnamon.
