The Black Nigra Hollyhock is one of the decorative plants for the cottage garden but also a versatile crop. The wonderfully vintage plant has deep purple, nearly black, blossoms and reaches up to 2 metres. The petals can be used as a dye or for making cough tea. The ground rootstock and the leaves are also edible after preparation. The seeds give a drying oil. All plant parts find many different kinds of use in herbal medicine. Typical for a mallow variety, out of the stems of stalks of the plant, stable fibres that are used for paper production can be gained.
