Ethnobotanically speaking, the bottle gourd is an extremely meaningful plant. The dried fruit of the gourd have been used for millennia as a storage and drinking vessel. Closed dried fruits can be used as rattles and are probably the oldest musical instruments known to man. Even as a resonator for stringed instruments such as the Brazilian berimbau, they are still used today. Although the calabash was originally native to Africa, it has spread to America and Asia in prehistoric times already. Thus Lagenaria siceraria is certainly one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind.
