Burley tobacco is characterized by an enlarged cell structure, which leads to a high absorption capacity for aroma substances. The species is, therefore, often used for pipe and chewing tobacco. 'Bursanica' is an old Burley variety that was mainly grown in the German-speaking world. The plants are very high-yielding and have a typical fir tree-shaped growth type.
