Cactus Seeds

Seeds of cacti and other succulents. These often prickly fellows can be cultivated from seed - and even more great news: There are a few hardy cactus varieties which can stay outside the whole year and grow in relatively harsh climates - under certain conditions, of course.
So why not try your hand at sowing some cacti and succulents in your garden? While raising cacti from seed is a task which needs to be well planned, and usually it makes sense to simply get cactus cuttings or offshoots and take it from there, breeding from seeds is often the only way, especially for rare and exotic species. Offshoots or cuttings are either not available, often do not survive the shipping, or can not legally be shipped internationally.
Getting cactus seeds to germinate is not complicated under the right conditions, but the seedlings are relatively sensitive and require constant temperatures and the right lighting - even though adult cacti can tolerate merciless sunlight, cactus seedlings must never be exposed to strong direct lighting. In addition, you may need a little patience when growing from seed, if you expect to see cactus blossoms - depending on the type of cactus it can take between one and three years, until they bear their first flowers. Nevertheless - the variety of cactus seeds and the ability to accompany the entire life cycle of the plant, makes it worth the effort.
