The yellow, sweet and pleasantly smelling berries of this plant, which is related to the Chinese lantern, not only has become prevalent as a delicacy in Europe under the name physalis but is also very healthy. It originates from South America, where it grows perennially. Therefore, before its great success as a ready-to-eat fruit, it had mainly been known as Cape gooseberry or giant ground cherry as it's grown in Peru as well as in South Africa. However, in Central Europe, it prospers excellently as a pot plant and can be hibernated well frost-free, and it can be bred well.
