Catmint is a perennial shrub from the mint family that looks good with its characteristic, small, blue blossoms in the shrub bed. If you cut it back directly after the first bloom, it may bloom a second time within one season. It exudes a pleasant, minty citrus scent. Catmint owes its name to its popularity with cats. Of course, not all cats react equally but it's not rare that cats passionately roll around in the plant - this can lead so far that the young plants are steamrolled. The plant has the exact opposite effect on humans. From the fresh weed, a pleasantly tasting, slightly relaxing tea can be made. The leaves can be mixed well with other herbs. However, the edible, aromatic blossoms are also suitable for the decoration of desserts and fruit salads. It's best to use all plant parts freshly as they lose a major part of their taste with drying. Catmint also unfolds another interesting effect with regard to insects - they are neither attracted nor calmed down but permanently deterred by the contained essential oils.
