There is a full row of wild plants that are called 'Sweet Chestnut' (Oenanthe Pimpinelloides, Bunium Bulbocastanum, Conopodium Majus). This type, the 'Corky Fruit Water Dropwort', is possibly the easiest to cultivate. It forms root knots with a nutty, sweet taste, growing to sizes comparable to hazelnuts or if they grow very large, radish. In former days, these were collected and prepared as tasty vegetables. The plant is perennial and forms increasingly more root knots as it gets older.
