The Devil's Trumpet, also known as Black Datura, was mainly used cultically, medicinal, and as an ornamental plant in India. With its complex blossoms that remind of upright growing angel trumpet blossoms, it's a very beautiful pot plant that also grows fast and even reaches an impressive size in annual growth. Its blossoms emit an intense scent in the evening. There are innumerable bred ornamental forms. This variety here is the wild form. Datura Metel grows as a wild plant in nearly all tropical regions of the world but also belongs to the most important cultivars of the thorn apples as it's fast-growing and robust. It belongs to the fundamental remedies of traditional Chinese medicine but its usage is reserved for very experienced healers as the toxic effect is strong. In South America, it's used for the deterrence of insects as an edge planting in gardens. The plant is very poisonous and should not be planted into gardens where toddlers play!
