Echinocereus triglochidiatus is a holy cactus of the Tarahumara in Mexico that's also known as Hikuri. It's to be found in many federal states of the US and Northern Mexico, where it gets along in very different locations: Stony deserts, shady conifer forests, crevices in mountains up to 3500m high. As it forms a dense, hilly cushion, which consists of up to hundreds of single sprouts that protect each other from climatic influences, it can also survive cooler temperatures. Indeed, it's even possible to keep the cactus outdoors in Central Europe without much weather protection. It survives temperatures of down to -12°C for a short period. Some sources even talk about -25°C. The single sprouts can reach up to 50cm in height and a perimeter of 10cm. After 5-10 years, it bears its conspicuous red blossoms, which stay open continuously for several days, for the first time.
