Hops belongs to the hemp family (Cannabaceae) and is, from an ethnobotanical point of view, probably one of the most important intoxication plants in Europe. Besides its meaning as a beer spice, the hop cones are also used medically as a strongly sedative remedy. Furthermore, it's a markedly decorative creeper. Young sprouts in spring are prepared as a vegetable ("Hops Asparagus").
