The juice of the leaves of this succulent alpine plant may be used like Aloe Vera. However, unlike the Aloe, the houseleek is completely hardy. The undemanding plant is excellent in coping with extremely dry locations. Previously, it was considered a protective plant against lightning, hence the names "homewort" or "houseleek".
