Humans have been interested in the effects of medicinal plants probably since the dawn of time, using these plants in many ways: to heal illness, to drive out evil spirits or thoughts, to induce mystical experiences and a great deal more. Conversely they also include many plants that formerly became demonised as “witches’ herbs” and were avoided in folk medicine. This is often explained by the fact that these plants are poisonous and consuming them can lead to poisoning symptoms, states of intoxication or even death.
