One of the agaves from which tequila is distilled, native to Central America. The maguey was formerly believed to flower only once a century and still holds the common name 'century plant', but it does in-fact blossom every 20-30 years. The liquor or mezcal obtained from its sap is known as the “real” tequila which comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco in which the town of Tequila lies. Fermented sap is also used to brew the Mexican national beverage pulque. For extracting the agave sap, the stem of the flowers is cut open. The sweet juice also has many medicinal properties.
