The Mate shrub originates from the South American jungles along the Paranà, where it grows to a considerable tree that reaches up to 15 metres in height. It belongs to the hollies and is evergreen in a mild climate. Yerba Mate, a tea made of the rubbed or cut leaves of the shrub, is a true national drink in Paraguay, Uruguay, South Brazil, and Northern Argentina. In South America, mate tea is traditionally enjoyed out of a drinking vessel called "cuia" with an intake manifold ("bombilla"). The vessel is made out of dried, small samples of the bottle gourd Lagenaria Siceraria, which we also offer. The drink has a very refreshing effect on the body and mind. Chewed, fresh leaves are also stimulating. Recently, the drink has also made its mark as a superfood as it isn't only energizing but also an anorectic without considerable adverse effects.
