True motherwort also known as cow wort or lion’s ear is originally native to the Ural Mountains and southern Siberia, but it is also a very traditional native medicinal plant in Central Europe, known as such since antiquity. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and was a standard plant in monastic and cottage gardens. The wild populations in Germany have shrunk enormously, and the plant is considered endangered. For a long time, the true motherwort was known only as a typical ornamental plant and bee pasture - it is especially attractive to bumblebees. Its medicinal properties have only been thoroughly researched in recent times. It has antispasmodic, sedative, blood pressure-lowering, and labour-inducing effects and is used in folk medicine as a heart tonic, for digestive complaints, menopausal symptoms, and also as a sedative. In the past, it was also used instead of hops to flavour beer.
