In India and Africa there is a long tradition of the so-called forest garden. Following the example of the plant communities in a forest, the different layers of vegetation are used for self-sufficiency in a very small area. Fruit trees and fruit-bearing climbers spread out in the higher layers, with berry bushes growing in their shadows.
