The fruits of the prickly pear variety Opuntia are called prickly pears and are a well-known delicacy in many southern countries. The pulp itself ("Nopalitos" = Cactus ears) is prepared as a vegetable in Mexico. All prickly pears have relatively few prickles and, with strong sunshine, can get very large in a dry climate.
