This winter squash is native to Peru and New Mexico, where it has been cultivated since around 3000 BC. The pumpkin 'Muscade de Provence' belongs to the most decorative and tastiest of these types of squash. The flattened round fruits with deeply incised ribs mature to a warm bronze tone and can then reach a diameter of 30-40 cm and a weight of 5-18 kg. Their flesh is firm, orange-red and bears a hint of chestnut. To obtain such a splendid specimen requies some effort though - the winter squash requires a lot of heat, plenty of nutrients, plenty of space and four months time to grow and mature.
