Sage is native to Asia Minor and North Africa but has been cultivated in Europe since ancient times. It belongs to the traditional, old medicinal and spice herbs. Sage smells aromatic and tastes spicy and bitter. With its chopped leaves, meat, fish, and vegetables are seasoned. A famous dish with sage as an important ingredient is "Saltimbocca alla Romana" or pasta with sage butter. But sage also has a long tradition as a remedy. Because of its active agents, it's antibacterial and disinfectant, anticonvulsant, diuretic, and fungicidal. Mainly, infusions, tea, or the extracted essential oil are used for inner and outer treatments. Best known is the application as a mouth wash in case of smaller injuries or inflammations of the teeth, gum, or buccal mucosa as well as against a sore throat.
