Sage Seeds (Salvia)
The plant genus ‘salvia’ includes about 850-900 varieties and is at home in most continents (apart from Australia and Antarctica). Sage plants belong to the labiate family and their particularly shaped flowers are known for their horticultural value and beauty.
The name of the genus ‘Salvia’ derives from the Latin term ‘salvare’ = healing, and sage is mainly know as a medicinal plant and seasoning herb. In particular the ‘true sage’ (Salvia offic inalis), was already widely used in the Middle Ages and known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial ingredients and its astringent effect.
But there are many other less known sage varieties, which are popular and used in alternative medicine, as kitchen herbs, for spiritual cleansing, incense and seasoning food.
