Scarlet Pimpernel is a low-growing plant with very durable, star-shaped, red blossoms from the family of the Primulaceae which is mainly known as a field weed. It blooms over the whole summer until autumn and likes to settle in vegetable gardens with nutrient-rich soil. In ancient Greece, it was said that it can be used to treat melancholy. In the Middle Ages, the plant was also used to heal supposed imbecility or insanity, which is reflected in its German name - 'gauch' means 'insane' in Middle High German. The preparation of the herb of the red pimpernel as tea is well-known in folk medicine. Indeed, it is, however, only suitable for the external application as it is slightly poisonous and its healing effect could be overshadowed by the side effects. Like many other poisonous plants, it's, therefore, preferably used in homeopathy, whereby the herb has also its eligibility: Used as a strong brew on the skin, it increases skin activity and can dry purulent wounds when dosed correctly. It can also be used in the treatment of ulcers and warts. It's still suitable for fumigations and has already been known as cleaning and protecting fumigation in the Middle Ages.
