The silver thistle offers a remarkable eyecatcher in the flower bed with its silver petals. Formerly, it was also called "Wetterdistel" (engl. weather thistle) in Germany, as its flower close when it'll start to rain within the next hours. Therefore, during hikes in the mountains, it's a good indicator of how the weather will be for the next hours. It's said that an angel has occurred to Charlemagne that has recommended the silver thistle as a remedy against the plague to him. Like this, he is said to have healed his troops. Carline thistle or "hunter's bread" is also a common name for the silver thistle as hunters used to eat its fleshy roots along the way. Today, the plant is under strict conservation and not allowed to be excavated.
