Southernwood is a subshrub that reaches up to 70-130cm and used to be very widespread in monastery and cottage gardens. It smells of camphor and wormwood. Some varieties of the plant intensely smell of lemon or cola, which is why it's also called Cola-Kraut (engl.: "cola weed") in German. If you grow it from seeds, it's always a question of coincidence which scent the grown plant will finally have. Southernwood is often used as a spice for greasy food as it stimulates digestion. However, you shouldn't use too much of it as it's very intense. In the case of "cola weed", you can also put some branches of it into water to flavour it with cola taste. It also bears the name "Maid's Ruin". This aims at the aphrodisiac effect of southernwood.
