Together with different sage varieties, Sweetgrass is the most important substance for cleansing fumigations. The dried grass smells pleasantly and unmistakably of coumarin (vanilla-woodruff flavour). Plaited to wreaths, it was an important part of Indian sweat lodge ceremonies. Especially near the roots, the characteristic flavour unfolds in the leaves. The grass, which is also called vanilla grass, is used for the preparation of drinks or sweet dishes as well as as a tobacco substitute. It spreads via underground offshoots and should either get sufficient space in the garden for spreading or be contained by the help of a root barrier.
