The seeds of the Syrian Rue, a half-shrub occurring in the East European steppes, contain one of the highest measured concentrations of Harman alkaloids (see also under Passiflora). These also give it the reputation of a dream plant. This plant is very widely used as incense in the Orient. The red natural colour of real Persian carpets is gained from it. Although you can grow the Syrian Rue in the garden, cultivation is difficult as it only grows well on very permeable, dry, and mineral soils. It even prefers saline substrate over garden soil and absolutely doesn't tolerate waterlogging.
