Tomatillos are physalis plants and closely related to tomatoes. The fruits are hidden in a lampion-like shell that's especially decorative shortly before the fruits are fully ripe. In Mexican cuisine, they are mainly used for salsas (develop their special flavour especially when cooked).

The fruits ripen in lampion-like shells. When they burst and the fruit turns light green, the tomatillos are ripe.
