In Europe, the ancient Greeks were probably the first to record the knowledge of medicinal herbs in writing. Later, this knowledge, together with medicinal plants from the Mediterranean area, found its way further north into the medieval monastery garden. Today, some of these ancient medicinal plants still have their place in pharmacies and are important ingredients in ointments, juices and tinctures.
