Water avens is a beautiful flower with red blossoms that can be found most often on streams or moist meadows. Its Latin name "rivale" even means "growing by the stream". It's often used for the planting of ponds. Water avens is to be used similar to normal avens and also contains clove oil. It has the same flavour as cloves and can also be used like them. In some federal states, it's already on the Red List. Therefore, in 2007, water avens was elected "Flower of the Year 2007" by the Foundation for Environmental Protection ("Stiftung Naturschutz") Hamburg.
