The Welsh Onion, which actually comes from Asia and is, therefore, also called Japanese Bunching Onion, is a hardy leek variety. In former days, the old cultivated plant was to be found in every cottage garden. The strong stalks may be cut all year round. Its bulbs have a pleasantly mild flavour and can reach a diameter of 4-5cm under cultivation conditions. The smaller bulbs together with their foliage are suitable as spring onions. The white blossoms of the Welsh onion are also edible and taste like onions. They are suitable as a salad garnish. Their prosperity is from June. From this point, they serve as very good honey plants.
