The wild form of the grape is the ancient form of the European cultivars and has become extremely rare in Europe. Presumably, there only are some vines left that grow wildly in warmer alluvial forests. Therefore, the plant is ranked extremely endangered in Germany. It grows up to ten metres in height and is perfectly suitable for a climbing greening of walls, especially because it shows its red foliage in autumn. Despite the visual similarity, it shouldn't be mistaken for woodbine (Parthenocissus), which is enormously common as a neophyte in Germany. The female plants of the grapevine bear edible, small, blue grapes with a slightly sour but very pleasant taste. A beautiful plant for moist, half-shady locations.
