The wild pear is a very rare tree which occurs naturally in warm, nutrient-rich sites around Central Europe. In fact, in some countries it is listed as part of the endangered species. It is the ancestors of many cultivated varieties of pears. The wild pear tree's ecological benefits for all kinds of wildlife is substantial. Insects love the flower nectar and hedgehogs, dormice, martens and badgers like its fruit. In mythology the wild pear is often the tree which attracts dragons, demons and witches. Another highly appreciated product of the wild pear is its very heavy and dense wood, which has a reddish color and is highly sought after for carving and wood turning.
