The Winter Cherry is a traditional, Indian medicinal plant that's cultivated in the drier regions of Asia. In Ayurvedic medicine, the winter cherry root takes a similarly significant position than the ginseng root in China. The herb is said to be antibiotic, as well. Traditionally, however, mainly the root bark, which immune-boosting effect is well-known, is used. In India, it's known as a rejuvenating tonic and aphrodisiac but also as a mild soporific remedy. It's mainly taken in the form of tea. Due to its slightly poisonous ingredients (solanum), the plant isn't suitable for raw consumption. A vegan rennet for cheese production can be made from the usually unenjoyable, very saponin-containing berries.
