'Frieda Welten' is a Swiss heirloom Winter Pea variety. It’s sown late in the year – from mid-October to early November. The seeds will still germinate at temperatures above 5°C. The smaller the plants remain the better for overwintering – so these seeds definitely shouldn’t be sown too early. The young plants should be protected with brushwood or fir branches, especially in exposed locations. Depending on weather conditions the little plants will start to grow as soon as the first glimmerings of spring arrive, which means that the first pods can generally be harvested in May of the year after sowing. This Sugar Pea variety is extremely vigorous and very decorative. It can easily grow 2 m tall and will need supporting. This is a heritage variety with the Swiss ProSpecieRara label, named after the grower who created it – Frieda Welten, a Swiss organic farming pioneer who passed on the knowledge she had amassed in courses she taught through the 1970s, becoming an iconic and much-loved figure.
