Seeds of vegetables that produce crops outside in winter

Many kinds of vegetables also grow very well in winter. The key to growing them successfully lies in good preparation and having a few helpful resources to hand.

Winter vegetables should be sown in late summer or early autumn, so that the plants are strong enough by the time winter comes. Make sure you don’t sow the seeds too densely, allowing the plants enough space to grow in.

The main enemies in winter are overly wet conditions and hard frosts, especially frost with sustained periods of sunshine, which can lead to frost damage. Mulches, fleeces and polytunnels will help here. Mulch keeps the soil moist and protects the roots from temperature fluctuations. Fleece covers offer additional frost protection and help to maintain even temperatures. Polytunnels protect plants from extreme weather conditions and extend the harvesting season.
