Pricking out
Pricking out is the process of separating out individual seedlings so that they have more room to grow.
Initially seeds are often sown quite densely in pots or seed trays, to save space and ensure high germination rates. Yet once they have germinated the seedlings develop fast and begin to compete for light, water and nutrients.
The right time for pricking out is when the first pair of true leaves have developed, after the early seed leaves. This is generally about 2-6 weeks after sowing. Using a dibber or your fingers, carefully free the young plants from the compost and transplant them further apart from each other or into individual pots. This allows them to develop strong roots and carry on growing healthily.
