Seed compost

Seed compost – or seed-sowing compost – is a special low-nutrient growing medium for sowing seeds and growing seedlings and cuttings. It provides fine, loose structures that promote germination and root growth without stressing the sensitive young plants.

Seed compost – key features

✔ Fine & loose – assists root formation.
✔ Low in nutrients – encourages strong root growth as plants actively search for nutrients.
✔ Free-draining – prevents waterlogging and mould formation.

When to use seed compost ?

  • For sowing vegetable, herb and flower seeds.
  • For rooting cuttings.
  • For sensitive young plants that need to grow on gently.

How to make your own seed compost – easy & sustainable

  • 2 parts sieved compost – provides micro-organisms and basic structure.
  • 1 part sand or perlite – loosens the compost structure, aids drainage.
  • 1 part coir or wood fibre – retains moisture, produces an airy structure.

Tip:  to make the compost even lower in nutrients you can reduce the compost portion.
